Host:
“Hello, and welcome to the Life and Scripture Podcast: Discovering God’s Truth for Everyday Living. I’m your host, and today we’re diving into a foundational question: What is theology, and why is it so important for every Christian?
“Now, theology might sound intimidating or academic, but it’s actually essential for every believer. It’s not just about knowing about God; it’s about knowing Him deeply and living in light of that knowledge. Let’s break it down.”
What is Theology?
“Theology is simply the study of God. The word comes from two Greek terms: Theos—meaning God—and Logos—meaning word or study. Theology is how we understand who God is, what He has done, and what He reveals about Himself in Scripture.
“In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul writes:
‘All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.’
“Theology isn’t about collecting facts; it’s about transformation. William Perkins defined theology as ‘the science of living blessedly forever,’ and Petrus van Mastricht called it ‘the doctrine of living unto God through Christ.’ This reminds us that theology is practical—it teaches us to know God and live for Him.”
Why is Theology Necessary?
“Why is theology essential? Here are three key reasons:
1. Theology helps us know God rightly.
“Jesus said in John 17:3:
‘Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.’
“Theology shapes our understanding of God’s character—His holiness, love, and sovereignty—so we worship Him in truth.
2. Theology equips us to live faithfully.
“Romans 12:2 tells us:
‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’
“Theology renews our minds, helping us align our choices, relationships, and responses to life’s challenges with God’s Word.
3. Theology prepares us to defend our faith.
“In 1 Peter 3:15, we’re called to:
‘Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.’
“Theology gives us the tools to stand firm in the truth, share the gospel, and guard against false teaching.”
How to Grow in Theology
“You might wonder, ‘How do I start growing in theology?’ Here are three simple steps:
1. Start with the Bible.
“Scripture is the foundation of theology, so make time to read and study it.
2. Use trustworthy resources.
“Study Bibles and books like Knowing God by J.I. Packer can help unpack biblical truths in an accessible way.
3. Learn in community.
“Join a Bible study group, attend a solid church, or engage with others who can help you understand God’s Word. Most importantly, pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance to grow in understanding and apply what you learn.”
Conclusion
“Theology isn’t just for pastors or scholars—it’s for all of us. It’s about knowing God, loving Him, and living for His glory.
“Thank you for joining me on the Life and Scripture Podcast. Until next time, may God bless you as you live out His truth.”
